The Middle Fork begins as a small stream in the Sawtooth Range near Stanley. As the river descends 3,000 feet in elevation, the environment changes from fir-covered mountainsides to granite sheer-walled canyons. The rapids are frequent and thrilling. The Middle Fork of the Salmon River was one of the original eight rivers designated in the National Wild & Scenic Rivers System and continues to be a great way to experience the Frank Church – River of No Return Wilderness Area.

Things to Know

  • The Middle Fork of the Salmon flows through the Frank Church - River of No Return Wilderness, the largest forest wilderness in the lower 48 states. The Middle Fork is the historical origin of Wilderness white water rafting trips.
  • During the warmer months, June through mid-September, the typical attire is a bathing suit, shorts, t-shirts and sports sandals.
  • Bring along a bottle of water, a hat, sunglasses and sunscreen.
  • Be prepared to get wet and dress according to your comfort level.
  • Wear clothes that dry quickly and avoid denim pants or shorts and leather footwear.
  • Life jackets are provided on outfitted trips.
